Why You Should Avoid Drinking Water Along With Your Meals – Here are the Five Reasons!

Everyone has heard the advice, “Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.” Water has lots of benefits such as brighter skin and better focus and concentration. You need water to survive, but drinking water while you eat is a different thing.

Tall glass of water next to plate of food is a common sight. Well, it’s great to have a glass of water with you at the table. But should you be drinking while eating? According to research, drinking more water during your meals is bad for you. Here’s why:

1. WATER DILUTES GASTRIC JUICES
Your stomach contains digestive acids that help in the digestion and breakdown of food. These ‘digestive fire’ (according to Ayurvedic texts) contain starch-digesting enzyme to break down the large nutrient molecules in the foods you eat into smaller molecules that you can absorb into your bloodstream.
Avoid Drinking Water With Your Meals
Drinking water with your meals will dilute this fire and make digestion less efficient. It may also cause cramping of the intestinal wall in some people. This condition will lead to slower absorption of nutrients. In a statement as cited by thehealthsite.com, TOI Shonali Sabherwal, Macrobiotic counselor said,‘Our stomachs have a knack of knowing when you will eat and starts releasing digestive juices immediately. If you start drinking water at the same time, what you are actually doing is diluting the digestive juices being released to digest your food, thereby hindering them from breaking down food.’

2. WATER REDUCES THE AMOUNT OF SALIVA
Drinking liquids during your meal dilutes your saliva. This does not only sends weaker signals to the stomach but also makes digestion much more difficult. You should be able to eat comfortably without lots of liquids. Allow your saliva to naturally help you swallow your food.

3. CAUSES ACIDITY
Drinking water during your meals dilutes your digestive system which will lead to a chain-reaction of ill-effects such as causing acid reflux and heart burn. Less gastric juice will be secreted to digest your food. The tendency is the undigested food leaks into your system as it gets absorbed through the stomach walls. Constant bouts of acidity can be attributed to this habit.

4. WATER INCREASES THE AMOUNT OF INSULIN IN YOUR BODY
Drinking water while you are eating can lead to a surge in your insulin levels much like high glycemic foods would. Shonali Saberwal said, “The more insulin is released in to your blood stream, the higher the chances of you storing fat in your body.” When your body cannot do the digestions well, glucose filled part of that food is converted into fat and stores it increasing your overall blood sugar levels.

5. WATER MAKES YOU PUT ON WEIGHT
According to Ayurveda, a weak digestive fire is one of the leading reasons for obesity. Not only does this lead to an imbalance between the vata, kapha and pitta elements in the body, but it also lead to the disruption in the way your body works.
