A study done by Dr. Eric Rimm, who is an associate professor at the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, included 93.600 women from the ages of 25 to 42 which were monitored for 18 years for how often they eat certain types of food.

Berries in particular gave the most remarkable results. Of all the participants, 34 % of them were less likely to experience a heart attack. The same percentage goes from the strawberries as well. When Dr. Rimm was asked about the amount of berries consumed, he said that those people ate around three servings of half a cup every week.

The answer is Anthocyanin, a type of dietary antioxidant flavonoid which is able to help the blood vessels dilate and offset the plaque build-up in the coronary arteries.
